SLRA Annual Spring Dune Clean-Up Day
March 26, 9am to 4pm
We typically host 2-3 clean up days on the sand dunes every year - one in the Spring, Mid-Summer and early Fall. We feel these events are one of the most critical and important things we can do to preserve the cleanliness and natural beauty of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes for everyone to enjoy.
Our clean-up day events are open to anyone that is interested in helping and all ages are welcome with parent or guardian. We have a lot of fun, laughs and make new dune friends while doing this. You would be AMAZED at some of the junk folks find out there!
Please consider volunteering for one of these events to help us keep our dunes clean and beautiful!
*Volunteers for this event MUST be pre-registered via this website, as we are limited to how many people can be on the dunes during the off-season. We'll will meet at the dune-side parking lot near the main DNR barn at 9:00am for instructions BEFORE you head out onto the dunes. We'll all promptly leave the dunes at 4:00pm that day and services brought you by; chesterssanitation.com/

Here are the results from the public survey we held online about 2 weeks ago, regarding the possible allowance of ORV's on specific local roadways. Survey result analytics and details are outlined within the survey background and this survey was posted for EVERYONE to take, regardless of their viewpoint. This is the very same exploratory data we provided to the Oceania Township Board for their use in considering this for the Silver Lake area.

ORV-Side Lake Michigan
Beach Preservation Efforts..
Driving on the Dunes in December??? Well...sort of......
A small rag-tag, but dedicated group of folks from the SLRA, M-DNR personnel and some wonderful local volunteers got together on a chilly Saturday morning in December to install some snow fencing around the massive pools of lake water that had migrated inland due to the high water levels of Lake Michigan over the last few years. Thankfully, the lake water levels have been slowly been receding, which also brings the water table down on the Dunes, effectively making those pools of water shrink in size. Yayyyy! :-D
In an effort to capture some of the blowing sand that strips off the beach each year creating low areas, we've installed some snow fence in hopes the effort causes the sand to drop-out of the wind as it slows down and deposit it into those low-lying areas of the beach that easily fill up with water each season. This is an experimental task, but if it works as we hope it does, the ORV side of the Dunes will increase in size back to what it was pre-flood stage for everyone to ride on, while also enlarging the size of the beach for everyone to enjoy this Summer as well. A win-win for everyone!
Keep your fingers crossed and we'll see how this goes. :-)
